Detroit Metro Airport
AFCAD 211 File

These files are now in the "ALPHA" stage and should be treated as such, and some support is available. Documentation is sketchy at this point and I am currently working on it. Your feedback is encouraged and I can be contacted at pmainville@vnwa.com. Note however unless requested I may not reply, normally this usually means for further clarification. Please let me know which version of the sim you are running and which platform. It saves me the trouble of writing back and asking you.

Release Version: Includes BGL, Textures, AFCAD and AFD in one package as released to the general public.

KDTW No ILS File For those who want to attempt to correct the ILS Frequencies and positioning. This file now contains an AFCAD which has corrected the ILS positions to coincide with the scenery. The Navaids are not entirely correctly finished though as I still need to tweak DME and GP and bandwidth on most of the approaches, but the localizers appear to be functioning properly.

Note the Exclude is important and before installing you might want to delete the one in your scenery folder to ensure it works properly

Special thanks to Kevin Au for pointing me in the right direction on this.

Detroit Metro Airport BGL Files

Installation:

Unzip all the BGL files (*.bgl) into the folder of your choice and should be called scenery. See notes to the right for recomendations.

The Installation of the BGL is a fairly simple setup but you can also customize them to your individual tastes. Personally, I keep all my addon scenery away from the Addon folder provided as I have found that excludes and other problems arise from using that folder. Just gives me better control and less fussing around with file placement.

In the past, as in FS2002 and FS2000, as a general rule I used the Scenedb folder which was provided. Within that folder I created a folder that would regionally house my scenery. Usually by province or state and then would create a folder inside that one called "scenery" and "texture" respectfully. The texture folder I usually leave empty, and I have read you can eliminate it, but have also read that its needed. Defaulting to the safe side I just leave it there empty. My understanding is that the program itself does look for it.

FS2004 did not provide this folder with the installation so I simply created my own. See the example below for pathing to this folder. You will also have to enable the folder once in your main settings menu within the FS2004. Simply point the program to the main KDTW folder to which the BGL files are located. Note: the Exclude must also be in this folder and hierarchy to work properly. If it is anywhere esle it will also possibly block the scenery from showing up.

Your Scenery config file will be a good starting place to figure out if the files took and are being recognized by the sim. The World library will only indicate that they are installed and not that they are actually being displayed.

December 27, 2003 -

Repaired the front courses for the following runways; 03R, 04R, and 04L. 27R and 27L weren't an issue as they did not have a common reciprocal frequency.

Still looking for a fix to the reciprocal frequency issue for the other runways but for now back courses are working correctly on those runways. These include Runways; 21L, 22R and 22L.

Also repaired all of the underlays for the runways, they have been adjusted width wise but need to review length wise as of yet.

  • This update supercedes the December 25, 2003 and those files should be simply copied over.

December 28-29, 2003

Re-aligned most of the Flattened surfaces on the polygons for smoother taxiing. Testes them using the default 737-400 at 15 kts and appear to be in great shape. Minor changes to follow here and there. I will be doing further testing using a less weighty aircraft in the following week.

January 07, 2004

Lots of fixes, including repositioning the buildings on the north end of the airport. Fixed some visibility problems and slightly increased the frame rate. Gates are not as predominantly visible as they once were.

Roof on C Terminal has now been fixed so that it displays properly. This was a transitional problem going from Nova to Novasim as the macros did not convert as automatically as others. This conversion also affected my gate stairway which I believe I have managed to fix all of them now.

Scenery is now in the ALPHA stage and concentrating pretty much on documentation at this time.

Detroit Metro Airport TEXTURE Files

Installation:

Unzip all the BGL files (*.bgl) into the folder of your choice and should be called scenery. See notes to the right for recomendations.

Words of caution: The exclude files must retain the same hierarchy of the scenery. If you put them anywhere else they may block default scenery and/or block the scenery itself. Safest way to run it is whithin the same folder as the KDTW50.bgl file. This is one of the problems I found running it in the default Addon folders.

  • December 27 Update added some missing textures.
  • January 07 Update a few more missing textures added.

Detroit Metro Airport AFCAD_2 File (FS2004 Only)

Installation:

This file should go in the same folder as your bgl files. It will overide the file located in your main scenery folder.

Please Read the text for the correct method of making this file work correctly.

Thanks to Dave D. for the testing platform on this.

(Amended text December 29, 2003 - please take notice)

The Installation of the AFCAD211 file is a little trickier than I had originally wanted it to be. Part of the problem here is that I simply used a copy of the original file and renamed it rather than modifying the original file.

Because my airport is located in a slightly different location than the defaul this causes the problem. Follow the following instructions to the letter and it should have your AI parking and taxiing properly.

  1. Navigate to your flight simulator NAMC scenery folder, (E:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Scenery\Namc\Scenery) and open the scenery folder.
  2. Locate the following file AP925160.BGL
  3. Back up this file in the following options A) (preffered) Right Click it and Zip it into a compressed file by the same name. (this way it can remain right in the directory.), or B) Remove the file directly and store in a safe location.
  4. Once safely backed up remove the file from the directory by either deleting it or putting it into a safe place. That safe place must be outside of your flightsim folders.
  5. Unzip the downloaded AFCAD2 file into this folder which replaces the original file.

Detroit Metro Airport AFD File (FS2002) *Note this may also work for FS2000

Installation:

This file replaces the AFD file in your World Scenery Folder. If the original KDTW is left it, you will get double displays in your airport list. I have not seen any problems with having both installed at the same time so its probably best just to leave the default in the folder as well.

I am no longer really supporting 2002, but may continue to allow the scenery to be compatible with the program. As far as I know this is the only file that you additionally need to run the scenery.

There is a compatible early AFCAD file available at Flightsim.com and at AVSIM.com which worked well with the earlier version of the program.

If it doesn't work here, all I can say is your on your own and would suggest either making one yourself or finding someone who will do it for you. I simply don't have the ability anymore to support this area of the desing.
